GeForce GTX 550 Ti vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti features a core clock frequency of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1026 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 192 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 7770, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1897 points
Difference: 1283 (68%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 116 Watts
Difference: 36 Watts (45%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 550 Ti should theoretically be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7770 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 98496 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 26496 (37%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 is quite a bit (about 39%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 550 Ti. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 550 Ti 28800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11200 (39%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 550 Ti is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 550 Ti 21600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5600 (35%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
