Radeon HD 5770 vs Radeon HD 7950

Intro

The Radeon HD 5770 has a GPU core speed of 850 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1200 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 7950, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1250 MHz on this specific model. It features 1792 SPUs along with 112 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 5770 108 Watts
Radeon HD 7950 200 Watts
Difference: 92 Watts (85%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 7950 should in theory be much superior to the Radeon HD 5770 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 240000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Difference: 163200 (213%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 should be much (about 164%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 5770. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 89600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 55600 (164%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 is quite a bit (about 88%) better at FSAA than the Radeon HD 5770, and will be able to handle higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12000 (88%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
