GeForce GT 450 (OEM) vs Radeon HD 7950

Intro

The GeForce GT 450 (OEM) uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 790 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 144 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 7950, which makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1250 MHz on this particular card. It features 1792 SPUs along with 112 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 7950 200 Watts
Difference: 94 Watts (89%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 7950 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the GeForce GT 450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 240000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 144000 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 is a lot (about 373%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM). (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 89600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 70640 (373%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7950 will be a lot (more or less 35%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 450 (OEM), and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 7950 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 450 (OEM) 18960 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6640 (35%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
