GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 features a GPU clock speed of 540 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR2 memory runs at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 32 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 480 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should in theory perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) is quite a bit (about 122%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10560 (122%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should be quite a bit (about 48%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2, and also capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2080 (48%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
