GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB features a GPU clock speed of 600 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 memory is set to run at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 112 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (67%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should theoretically perform a little bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 6400 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB should be much (more or less 75%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14400 (75%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (50%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
