GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB comes with a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 800 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 Stream Processors, 48 TAUs, and 12 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which comes with GPU core speed of 800 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 480 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 84 Watts
Difference: 21 Watts (33%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 25600 (67%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB should be much (approximately 38%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 26400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7200 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB is the winner, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO 1.5GB 6600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 200 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
