GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 550 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR2 memory runs at 500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 96 Stream Processors, 48 Texture Address Units, and 12 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 84 Watts
Difference: 21 Watts (33%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 will be much (approximately 38%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 26400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 7200 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 is a better choice, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

GeForce 9600 GSO ASUS 512 6600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 200 (3%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
