GeForce GT 340 1GB vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 1GB comes with clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 96 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 480 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
GeForce GT 340 1GB 69 Watts
Difference: 6 Watts (10%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should in theory be a bit faster than the GeForce GT 340 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (18%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) will be just a bit (approximately 9%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 340 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1600 (9%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (45%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
