Radeon HD 5670 vs Radeon HD 5770

Intro

The Radeon HD 5670 makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 775 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this specific model. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 5770, which comes with a core clock speed of 850 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1200 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 800(160x5) SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5670 61 Watts
Radeon HD 5770 108 Watts
Difference: 47 Watts (77%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 5770 should be just a bit faster than the Radeon HD 5670 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5670 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 12800 (20%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5770 should be much (approximately 119%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5670. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 15500 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18500 (119%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5770 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5670 6200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7400 (119%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
