GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 comes with a core clock frequency of 783 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 902 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is made up of 192 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which has core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Difference: 43 Watts (68%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should be a little bit faster than the GeForce GTS 450 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 6272 (11%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 will be much (approximately 31%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5856 (31%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 450 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6128 (96%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
