GeForce 8800 GT 512MB vs Radeon HD 5870

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 512MB has a core clock frequency of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 65 nm design. It is made up of 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 5870, which has GPU clock speed of 850 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1200 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1600(320x5) Stream Processors, 80 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 105 Watts
Radeon HD 5870 188 Watts
Difference: 83 Watts (79%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5870 should in theory be a lot faster than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 153600 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 96000 (167%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5870 is quite a bit (about 102%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 68000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 34400 (102%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5870 is quite a bit (more or less 183%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 5870 27200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 17600 (183%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
