GeForce GT 340 vs Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 has core speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 96 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 650 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this particular card. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 50 Watts
GeForce GT 340 69 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB should theoretically perform a small bit faster than the GeForce GT 340 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (18%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 340 will be a bit (approximately 13%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 17600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2000 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB is superior to the GeForce GT 340, but it probably won't make a huge difference. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (18%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
