GeForce GT 340 vs Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 comes with a GPU core speed of 550 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 850 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 96 Stream Processors, 32 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, which makes use of a 40 nm design. ATi has set the core speed at 650 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 50 Watts
GeForce GT 340 69 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB, in theory, should perform a bit faster than the GeForce GT 340 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (18%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 340 will be just a bit (more or less 13%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 17600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2000 (13%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB is a better choice, though only just barely. (explain)

Radeon HD 6570 (OEM) 2GB 5200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 800 (18%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
