GeForce 9800 GTX vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GTX features a clock speed of 675 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 1100 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit bus, and uses a 65 nm design. It features 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, which features a core clock frequency of 750 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 160 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 31 Watts
GeForce 9800 GTX 140 Watts
Difference: 109 Watts (352%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce 9800 GTX should in theory be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 70400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (144%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9800 GTX is quite a bit (about 620%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 43200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 6000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 37200 (620%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce 9800 GTX is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce 9800 GTX 10800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 3000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7800 (260%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
