GeForce GTS 250 1GB vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GTS 250 1GB features a GPU core speed of 738 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 1100 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB, which comes with core clock speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 160 SPUs along with 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 31 Watts
GeForce GTS 250 1GB 145 Watts
Difference: 114 Watts (368%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTS 250 1GB should perform much faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 1GB 70400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (144%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 250 1GB will be quite a bit (about 687%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 1GB 47232 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 6000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 41232 (687%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 250 1GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTS 250 1GB 11808 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 1GB 3000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8808 (294%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
