GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) has a GPU clock speed of 540 MHz, and the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM is set to run at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 memory running at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 160 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 47 Watts
Difference: 16 Watts (52%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) should be quite a bit (approximately 73%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3640 (73%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) should be a lot (approximately 73%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), and will be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1820 (73%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
