GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 comes with core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 256 MB of DDR2 RAM. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 625 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 800 MHz on this card. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 50 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (61%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 should theoretically be much better than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 16000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 3200 (25%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 will be quite a bit (approximately 76%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 8800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3800 (76%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 is quite a bit (more or less 76%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), and capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 4400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1900 (76%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
