Radeon HD 4550 512MB vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The Radeon HD 4550 512MB features a core clock speed of 600 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 800 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 55 nm design. It features 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which features a GPU core clock speed of 625 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 160 Stream Processors, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4550 512MB 25 Watts
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
Difference: 6 Watts (24%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) should be a little bit (more or less 4%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 4550 512MB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 4800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 200 (4%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) is the winner, but only just. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 2400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 100 (4%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
