GeForce GT 340 1GB vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 1GB uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 550 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 850 MHz on this model. It features 96 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which features clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce GT 340 1GB 69 Watts
Difference: 38 Watts (123%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GT 340 1GB should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (325%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 340 1GB will be much (approximately 252%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 12600 (252%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 340 1GB is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1900 (76%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
