Radeon HD 5770 vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The Radeon HD 5770 has a GPU core speed of 850 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1200 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6790, which features a GPU core clock speed of 840 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1050 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 800 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5770 108 Watts
Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
Difference: 42 Watts (39%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon HD 6790 should theoretically be quite a bit superior to the Radeon HD 5770 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5770 76800 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (75%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5770 should be a little bit (approximately 1%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6790. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 34000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 400 (1%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5770 is superior to the Radeon HD 6790, but only just. (explain)

Radeon HD 5770 13600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 160 (1%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
