GeForce GT 315 vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GT 315 makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 625 MHz. The DDR3 memory works at a frequency of 790 MHz on this specific card. It features 48 SPUs along with 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6790, which has core clock speeds of 840 MHz on the GPU, and 1050 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 315 52 Watts
Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
Difference: 98 Watts (188%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6790 should in theory be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 315 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 315 25280 MB/sec
Difference: 109120 (432%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 is a lot (about 236%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 315. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 315 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23600 (236%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6790 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 315 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8440 (169%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
